  • 1 cup Flour All-purpose or gluten-free blend
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar Light or dark works well
  • 1/2 cup Butter Use unsalted
For the Caramel Filling
  • 1 cup Milk Whole or almond milk for dairy-free
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Pure vanilla extract preferred
  • 2 tablespoons Additional Flour To thicken the caramel

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Gather ingredients and tools.
  2. In a medium bowl, melt the butter. Combine oats, flour, and brown sugar with the melted butter.
  3. Press about 2/3 of the crust mixture into the greased baking pan. Bake for 10 minutes until slightly golden.
  4. In a saucepan, melt additional butter and stir in brown sugar. Gradually add milk, vanilla, and additional flour while stirring.
  5. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring continuously for about 3 minutes until thickened.
  6. Pour the caramel filling over the cooled crust, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle remaining crust mixture on top.
  7. Reduce oven temperature to 300°F (150°C), bake for an additional 20 minutes until the top layer is golden.
  8. Allow bars to cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares.
